When to go

Climate, month by month.

Pack right

What to wear, by season.

November is arguably a better time to visit Calabar than peak December if you want the city without maximum crowds. Carnival preparations are visible, prices are lower, and conditions are excellent.
essential
Light clothing

November is warm and dry. Pre-carnival Calabar is an excellent visit.

Calabar in December is built for outdoor events. Pack entirely for heat, comfort, and mobility. For Carnival Friday and the main parade, plan to be standing for 4-8 hours. Footwear matters more than anything else in your bag.
essential
Very light clothing

Calabar in December is warm with moderate humidity. Light cotton or linen is ideal for all carnival activities and outdoor events.

essential
Flat comfortable shoes

Carnival parades involve hours of standing and walking. Flat shoes are not optional. Heels are a logistical mistake on parade routes.

essential
Sun hat and SPF 50

Day-long outdoor carnival events. The dry season sun in Calabar is intense. UV protection is essential for extended outdoor exposure.

optional
Light layer for evening events

Calabar evenings in December are pleasant. One light layer covers all scenarios.

Visiting Calabar in the rainy season is challenging due to the very high rainfall. June is particularly difficult. Gorilla permits for Cross River NP can still be used but logistics become complex.
essential
Heavy-duty rain jacket

Calabar rainy season is intense. A proper waterproof is essential.

essential
Waterproof sandals

Calabar streets flood in heavy rain. Waterproof rubber sandals are the practical choice.

Peak rainy season in Calabar requires careful planning. The gorilla habituation programme at Cross River NP continues in all weather but road access requires 4WD and local guides.
essential
Full waterproof set

June-August in Calabar sees extraordinary rainfall. Full rain gear is essential.

essential
Quick-dry clothing

Humidity is extremely high. Quick-dry fabrics are far more practical.
