When to go

Climate, month by month.

Pack right

What to wear, by season.

November is a very good month to visit Abuja. Weather is comfortable, conditions are pleasant before peak harmattan, and the city is less crowded than December.
recommended
Light jacket for evenings

November evenings cool quickly. One layer is sufficient.

recommended
Dust scarf

Harmattan begins in November. Start dust protection early.

Abuja's December is frequently misunderstood. Visitors expecting year-round tropical heat are surprised by genuinely cold nights. If combining a Lagos visit with an Abuja detour, pack for two climates. Lagos daywear is insufficient for Abuja evenings.
essential
Layering system

Light shirt for afternoon warmth, a proper jacket or fleece for evening and morning. Night temperatures of 14-18°C are genuinely cold by Nigerian standards.

essential
Moisturiser and lip balm

Abuja's December air has humidity under 25%. Skin dries and cracks rapidly. Pack a thick body lotion and apply twice daily.

recommended
Dust scarf

Harmattan is active in Abuja through December. A light scarf for morning outdoor activity near construction zones and open areas.

recommended
Closed shoes

Dust settles in open shoes. Comfortable closed shoes suitable for Abuja's planned streets and evening restaurant circuit.

Abuja in the rainy season has excellent climate for sightseeing — temperatures are comfortable and the city is at its most scenic and green.
essential
Light waterproof layer

Abuja rains are heavy but brief. A packable jacket handles most events.

essential
Light breathable clothing

June-September is warm and humid. Cotton or linen works well.

Abuja is well-planned enough that the rainy season is manageable. Millennium Park and other landmarks are still accessible between rain windows.
essential
Waterproof jacket

July-August sees the heaviest rains. A proper waterproof is needed.

recommended
Comfortable walking shoes

Waterproof or quick-drying shoes for visiting outdoor monuments.
